Kinja'd!!!

So Saturday it was raining and what that means in the datassun is a lot of slipping and sliding . While that's fun for most RWD car owners . It also means a lot of pressure on the spider gears in my rear end. Having a open diff is really challenging with big horsepower. No matter what the road surface my car will blow off one tire at a time, putting more and more pressure on the open rear end to hold up.

Well it gave up and threw in the towel Saturday. I think it obviously had to do with it being slippery outside Saturday but this was bound to happen sooner or later. I've talked to a few Z car owners while some of them weld the diff and call it good these guys don't daily drive their Z's the other ones recommend spending $2500 + for a 240sx diff swap kit and that sounds STUPID . I paid 2600 for the car itself how could I justify paying the same amount on a rear end swap kit that doesn't even come with the 240sx diff.. Sounds like Crack prices to me so it's now up to me on finding a car I never thought I'd be looking for... a 1987-1989 300ZX Turbo for the LSD R200 diff... From what I hear this is impossible to find but I think I have a few tricks up my sleeve.

If anyone has a R200 diff I'd be willing to buy it from ya so I could put a aftermarket LSD in it but that would be a little more expensive than finding the Clutch type LSD out of the 300zx. It would save me time tho and we all know that converts to money somehow.

Here have a 32 Ford with a Hemi in it from Cars and Coffee this Sunday in Austin. This is a apology for my headline if its "too soon"

I'm most offended by the '32 Ford pic not coming through.

I have literally no idea if you could cobble this together, and this is just a thought but the diff and housing from a Early 90's Thunderbird is pretty strong and very available..

I would not even consider running a welded diff in your car. Especially if you have sticky tires.

Well unless it's a IRS setup on the Thunderbird which I would be surprised if it was then I might maybe kinda have a chance but no body has swapped a thunderbird rearend into the car yet. If it's a solid axle it would most likely be a 8.8 which would handle all the power I'm making right now which is around 330-350 to the ground but I'd lose all my handling I gain from the IRS ..

I don't have sticky tires.. I was actually betting that my diff would hold up because my tires are so shitty but I was wrong. The car is making over 330hp to the ground through a 195/60/15 sumitomo .. However, with wider wheels and tires coming soon in the 10.5" ballpark and a 275 or bigger going on the rear I agree.. not much of a option to weld the diff. Not to mention the car doesn't have any steering angle so everytime I get the car sideways I have to be super careful not to get to sideways or it will just spin.

The MN-12 chassis had IRS.

What about rebuilding your current diff?

Thunderbirds are IRS.

Kinja'd!!!

Thunderbird IRS Traction-Lok Limited Slip

The independent rear suspension (IRS) found on 1989-1997 Thunderbird's and Lincoln Mark VIII's are different from the well known solid axle's found on Mustangs (FOX or SN95), and other rear wheel drive Fords. I will refer to the MN12 Thunderbirds differential here only. The differentials for the MN12 Thunderbirds come in two sizes 7.5 and 8.8 (diameter of the ring gear). All Thunderbird SC's came with 8.8 differentials and depending on the transmission (automatic or manual) either 2.73, 3.08, or 3.27 ring and pinion gear set. If you decide on replacing or upgrading your Traction-Lok Limited Slip there are some important things to keep in mind. When upgrading the 8.8 Traction-Lok unit you will find a lot of 8.8 units that are made to fit the solid axle cars but, will not fit the IRS cars. The MN12 8.8 and 7.5 differentials use a 28-spline shaft. The difference between the standard solid axle and the IRS differential is a "Step" (groove) in both differential side gears in order to retain the Circlip (C clip) that holds the Halfshafts in place (see diagram). A "Step" is a groove that will allow the Circlip (C-Clip) to slip over the Halfshaft and secure the Halfshaft in the differential. The differential has precise tolerances and should not be disassembled or assembled without the proper tools and experience. When replacing or adding a Traction-Lok Limited Slip to your SC that may or may not have one installed the easiest ways is to get a Traction-Lok Limited Slip unit from Auburn Gear Inc. 219-925-3200. High Performance unit for standard OE replacement part# 542079 or Pro Series unit part# 542080 for better traction and faster engagement.

I already notice a problem .. I have what's known as a long nose R200 diff. and that would be considered "short nose" like a 240sx or q45 infinity. The problem is that it requires a ton of fabrication to have this mounted in a 280z. Probably why the kit to swap a 240sx rear end is 2500+

It's a option I'm just scared to see how destroyed it all is after that horrible clanking noise. Once I get the car back up north to DFW and get a chance to tear it apart I'll be able to see how bad it really is. I'd love for it not to be that bad and hope I can just throw a LSD kit into the R200 I have but I have a feeling it's beyond gone.. I really don't know when a spider gear rear end breaks does it usually take everything with it ?

http://irsforum.boardhost.com/viewtopic.php?… A bit more information. Like i said it may require a hell of a lot of fab work, but you could probably get the diff and half shafts for $100 from a junkyard.

WAIT! before you do anything silly, know that Subaru used R180s (yes, that exact carrier) for STIs between (i think) 04 and 07. Find one of those, they're a bolt in swap, and then change to wolf creek's beta motorsport flanges to use the stock 240z halfshafts. Those flanges are silly expensive at 500 bucks, you may be better off just talking to a machine shop, but the rest of the swap is super easy. I looked into it a lot when I though my diff was starting to become incontinent, but it turned out just to be my driveshaft shitting the bed.

Alternatively, you can get OS Giken internals, which are also crazy expensive at a thousand dollars. But for any LSD (that 300zx diff included) you're gonna be throwing away a lot of cash.

Sounds like you know what you're talking about. I think I'll hit up my super secret parts warehouse to see how much a 04-07 STI diff cost. I also found a Phantom LSD for 350 bucks !! Sounds like it's not a smart diff in the sense of torque awareness but it's the right cost and from what I see does the job I need it to do.

Pretty sure the infinity j30 used the 300z rear end too. Not like there very common to see these days but maybe you can find one of those?

get a diff that will work with it. you can just feed it power, and it'll continue to feed you RWD.

If he had the cash for a wavetrac he probably wouldn't be in this situation. LOL.
